Department of State
Washington, DC
July 1, 2016
On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate
the people of Burundi on the 54th anniversary of your independence on
July 1.
This year’s celebrations come in the midst of a yearlong crisis that
has shown the resilience of both the Burundian people and the Arusha
Peace and Reconciliation Agreement. The United States continues to stand
with all Burundians committed to peace and prosperity in their country
and in the region. I call on all people of Burundi to reach a peaceful
resolution to the ongoing crisis through a mediated dialogue.
I wish all Burundians a peaceful and joyous celebration.
