Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Catherine Russell will travel to Sudan and Malawi from April 23 – 30.
In Sudan, Ambassador Russell will meet with government officials,
representatives of civil society and international organizations,
community leaders, and students to discuss the status of women and girls
in Sudan. Her meetings will focus on preventing violence against women,
promoting women’s economic empowerment, and enhancing women’s roles in
peace, security, and reconciliation efforts.
The Ambassador will also meet with Awadeya Mahmoud, a 2016 recipient of the Secretary’s International Women of Courage Award.
In Malawi, Ambassador Russell will meet with government officials,
local leaders, members of civil society, and students to learn more
about the status of adolescent girls—particularly their health,
education, and safety—as part of a new U.S. effort to empower girls in
Malawi under the Let Girls Learn initiative championed by First Lady
Michelle Obama.
