Department of State
Washington, DC
October 3, 2013
On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I
congratulate the people of Lesotho as you celebrate your National Day
this October 4.
Lesotho is a longstanding friend and partner of the United States.
Together, our countries are creating new opportunities for future
generations of Basotho by working to strengthen democratic institutions
and the rule of law, improve public health, and promote sustainable
economic growth.
The United States remains committed to building on this strong legacy
of cooperation between our nations. I am proud of the work we have both
undertaken in the battle against HIV/AIDS, and we will continue our
close partnership with Lesotho to achieve our mutual goal of a stable,
healthy, and prosperous society for all Basotho.
As you celebrate the 47th anniversary of your independence, I offer
all Basotho my warmest wishes for continued peace and lasting
prosperity.
