President Obama met with African Union Chairperson Dr. Nkosazana
Dlamini-Zuma in Pretoria, South Africa on Saturday, June 29th. The
President congratulated Chairperson Dlamini-Zuma on the 50th anniversary
of the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) /African
Union, and expressed U.S. commitment to broaden and deepen the U.S. –
African Union partnership. President Obama commended the African
Union’s leadership on regional peace and security, including its vital
work to resolve the conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Democratic
Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, and Mali. The
President also underscored the importance of the African Union’s
leadership in advancing development and democratic norms across the
continent. The leaders also discussed shared interest in empowering
women and youth, expanding trade and investment, and creating
broad-based prosperity for people across the African continent.
