Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield will travel to Liberia, December 14-17.
While there, the Assistant Secretary will attend a ceremony on
December 15 marking the commissioning of the first of four turbines at
the Mount Coffee hydropower plant. The U.S. Government, through the
Millennium Challenge Corporation, has been a key financial contributor
to the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee plant, as part of its
commitment to double electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa through
the Power Africa initiative. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf,
other foreign dignitaries, and Millennium Challenge Corporation Deputy
Chief Executive Officer Nancy Lee will also take part in the ceremony.
During her trip, the Assistant Secretary will also meet with senior
government officials, participants in President Obama’s Young African
Leaders Initiative (YALI), and female students taking part in the Obama
administration’s Let Girls Learn initiative.
