On Friday, September 16, 2016, the newest African Ambassador to the 
U.S. – His Excellency Edward Yakobe Sawerengera, Ambassador of the 
Republic of Malawi – presented his Letters of Credence to President 
Obama at an Ambassador Credentialing Ceremony in the Oval Office at the 
White House.
The presentation of credentials is a traditional ceremony that marks 
the formal beginning of an Ambassador’s service in Washington.
