VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN AND DR. JILL BIDEN TRAVEL TO EGYPT, KENYA, AND SOUTH AFRICA
Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden have arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh, the first stop on a week-long trip to Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa. While in Egypt, the Vice President will meet with President Mubarak to discuss a full range of bilateral and regional issues. The Vice President will then meet with key leaders in Kenya, including Kenyan President Kibaki and Kenyan Prime Minister Odinga. In addition to discussing a range of bilateral issues, the Vice President will address our shared interests in peace and stability in the region, particularly in Sudan and Somalia. The Vice President will also deliver a major speech underscoring the importance of the United States-Kenya relations at Kenyatta International Conference Centre. In his speech, the Vice President will discuss Kenya’s great promise and the need to work together to meet regional challenges. Finally, the Vice President will travel to South Africa, where he will meet with South African Deputy President Motlanthe, South African Minister of International Relations Nkoana-Mashabane, and other world leaders in attendance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. The Vice President and Dr. Biden will represent the United States at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and attend the U.S. Men’s National Team’s first game – USA v. England – before returning to the United States.

Sunday, June 6th – Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt
The Bidens arrive in Sharm el-Sheikh. There are no other public events scheduled on this day.
Monday, June 7th – Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt and Nairobi, Kenya
The Vice President:
At approximately 11:00 AM LOCAL TIME/4:00 PM ET, the Vice President will meet with President Hosni Mubarak to discuss a full range of bilateral and regional issues. They will first meet with an expanded delegation. The delegation meeting will have a photo spray at the top. The delegation meeting will be followed by a one-on-one meeting. There will be a pool spray at the top of the one-on-one meeting.
In the afternoon, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will depart Egypt en route Kenya.
Dr. Jill Biden:
In the morning, Dr. Biden will have a courtesy call with Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak.
Tuesday, June 8th – Nairobi, Kenya
The Vice President:
At approximately 10:30 AM LOCAL TIME/3:30 AM ET, the Vice President will meet with President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
At approximately 12:00 PM LOCAL TIME/5:00 AM ET, Vice President Biden, President Kibaki, and Prime Minister Odinga will make a statement to the press.
At 3:00 PM LOCAL TIME/8:00 AM ET, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will visit the August 7th Memorial Park and lay a wreath.
At 4:00 PM LOCAL TIME/9:00 AM ET, the Vice President will have a courtesy call with Speaker of Parliament Hon. Kenneth Marende.
At 4:30 PM LOCAL TIME/9:30 AM ET, the Vice President will meet with the Reform Caucus of Parliamentarians. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting.
Dr. Jill Biden:
Dr. Biden to visit Kibera area.
In the morning, Dr. Biden will take a walking tour of the Kibera area of Nairobi. She will be led by representatives of the Binti Pamoja (Daughters United). This center is run by Carolina for Kibera (CFK).
During her tour, Dr. Biden will learn about the special programs focusing on women’s and girls’ empowerment. The tour will end at the Binti Pamoja safe house, where an original piece of poetry will be read and presented to Dr. Biden.
Wednesday, June 9th – Nairobi, Kenya
The Vice President:
At 10:30 AM LOCAL TIME/3:30 AM ET, the Vice President will a deliver a major speech underscoring the importance of the United States-Kenya relations at Kenyatta International Conference Centre. In his speech, the Vice President will discuss Kenya’s great promise and the need to work together to meet regional challenges.
At 1:30 PM LOCAL TIME/6:30 AM ET, the Vice President will meet with President Salva Kiir of Southern Sudan.
Afterwards, the Vice President will attend a meeting on Somalia to discuss support for the Somali people and the Djibouti Peace Process.
In the early evening, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will visit Nairobi National Park.
Dr. Jill Biden:
Dr. Biden to visit and tour Beacon of Hope, Ongata Rongai.
In the morning, Dr. Biden will arrive at the Beacon of Hope. First, Dr. Biden will receive an overview on the Beacon of Hope Program by Jane Wathome, Founder and Executive Director Beacon of Hope. Mrs. Wathome will then lead Dr. Biden on a tour of the health care facility.
Next, Dr. Biden will visit with schoolchildren at the Beacon Academy Kindergarten.
Dr. Biden will conclude her visit with a stop at Beacon of Hope’s Vocational Training Facility. She will tour the weaving and sewing vocation training center and learn about the business development classes taking place onsite.
Thursday, June 10th – Nairobi, Kenya and Johannesburg, South Africa
The Bidens will depart Kenya en route South Africa.
The Bidens arrival in South Africa, will also be OPEN PRESS.
The Vice President:
At 4:00 PM LOCAL TIME/10:00 AM ET, the Vice President will meet with former South African President Thabo Mbeki to discuss implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Sudan and the situation in Darfur.
In the evening, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will attend the FIFA Kick-off Celebration Concert at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
Dr. Jill Biden:
In the afternoon, Dr. Biden will visit and tour Mapetla Daycare in Soweto.
Friday, June 11th – Johannesburg, South Africa
In the morning, the Vice President will attend a reception with South African leaders. The Vice President will deliver remarks at this event.
In the afternoon, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will arrive at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. They will represent the United States at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and attend the first game.
Saturday, June 12th – Pretoria and Rustenburg, South Africa
The Vice President:
In the morning, the Vice President will attend a meeting with Deputy President Kgalema Petrus Motlanthe and Minister of International Relations Maite Nkoana-Mashabane in Pretoria. Additional details will be released closer to the date.
In the evening, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will attend the U.S. Men’s National Team’s first game – USA v. England – at the FIFA World Cup in Rustenburg. This game will be OPEN PRESS.
Dr. Jill Biden:
In the morning, Dr. Biden will visit the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West, Soweto.
