Assistant Secretary Posner traveled to Tripoli May 30-31. While there, he met with a number of senior government officials, as well as representatives of civil society, the private sector, and international organizations, including the United Nations and the International Federation of the Red Cross.

Discussions covered the upcoming parliamentary elections, detention policies and practices, freedom of expression, and issues relating to accountability and reconciliation. The discussions with Libyan officials were frank, respectful, practical, and forward-looking.

Assistant Secretary Posner engaged with members of a dynamic and rapidly emerging civil society. Libyans are increasingly exercising their freedoms of speech, press, assembly, and association, as well as advocating for greater official transparency and accountability.

Assistant Secretary Posner came away from discussions with a sense of hope and renewed commitment to stand by the Libyan Government and people as they work to build a better future and overcome the tragic legacy of the Qaddafi years.
