African Center Hosts Next Generation of African Military Leaders

WASHINGTON, D.C. March 2, 2010The Africa Center for Strategic Studies at the campus of the National Defense University at Fort Lesley J. McNair welcomed 65 military officers from 38 African nations to its 2010 Next Generation of African Military Leaders Course. The four-week leadership program will run through March 26 and will focus on enhancing professionalism, ethics and leadership in African militaries. The participating officers will examine Africa’s contemporary and emerging security threats and analyze civil-military relations on the continent to determine the role and place of professional military officers in advancing national security in democratizing states.


During his keynote address at the opening ceremony Brigadier General Dominique Djindéré, Chief of Defense Staff, Burkina Faso, addressed the subject of Africa’s Security Challenges and Senior Military Leadership.


Consisting of mostly majors and lieutenant colonels, the participating officers were selected by their respective countries by virtue of their command experience, staff responsibilities and leadership potential. Participants hail from: Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Southern Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, The Gambia, Togo, Uganda and Zambia. ###
